The Pixel 6 & 6 Pro are expected to start a new chapter in the Pixel history book. A chapter where Google isn't just launching a Pixel phone just for the sake of it but actually going all out to compete with the best of the best.

We’ve seen the design of the handset, heard the top-level specs, know some of the new internals, and are continuing to learn more about its software features. Today is yet another day we get to learn some new features of the Pixel 6.

First up, we know that the Pixel 6 and Pro will have under-display fingerprint scanner. We don't know if it's going to a 3D ultrasonic or a 2D optical scanner but what we know is this is how the unlocking experience is going to look on the Pixel 6. With Android 12 Google has implemented a new animation when unlocking the handset and It’s hard to deny that the new fingerprint unlock animation is smooth, but it might not be to everyone’s taste considering how long the wave animation is.

So it would be nice if there's an option to reduce the animation. Anyway, 9 to 5 Google has managed to figure out the resolutions of the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro's screens. The Pixel 6 will have a 1080p display while the 6 Pro will have a 1440p display. Both will be 120Hz.

The hole punch cutout for the Pixel 6 will be 55 pixels in diameter compared to the 65 pixels of its predecessor. On the other hand, the Pro will have a larger cut out for its selfie camera, measuring 70 pixels. The code further reveals that the Pixel 6 Pro’s front-facing camera will be capable of 4K video recording, which is why it has a bigger punch hole.

This feature will not be present on the Pixel 6, though. Furthermore, the Google Camera app contains an ID for a 'front torch' relating to the Pixel 6 series. Now, 9to5Google is inferring that this means the Pixel 6 series will have a front LED flash which I don't think is true at all considering either of the handsets has any cutout for the front flash and it doesn't much sense either. So I guess the term “front torch” indicates a screen flash feature like the one we see in the Pixel 5.

Also, both Pixel 6 handsets will offer up to 7x zooming capability while recording videos in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second. In comparison, the Pixel 5 offers only 3xzoom while recording video in 4K at 60. Of course, with that said, Google is also expected to launch their first foldable smartphone at the end of the year, hopefully along side the Pixel 6, and we have some more information about that handset as well.

According to Display analyst Ross Young, the Pixel Fold will have the latest foldable display tech from Samsung that is 120Hz LTPO display which means the phone will offer a high refresh rate without sacrificing much battery like conventional high refresh rate displays. The display size will be 7.57-inch and it's an in folding one like Samsung's foldables. Also, it will have ultra-thin glass from Samsung.

Traditionally we see the Google Pixel release towards the latter half of the year and Google   is not changing their release schedule with the Pixel 6 which means expect the launch to happen in early October. We know a few things about the Pixel 6 already such as a new front design where the punch hole camera is not only going to be smaller than last year but Google is also changing the position from far left to the middle.

Also, the handset is expected to have an in-display fingerprint scanner. That said, during an earnings call last year,   Google's CEO said that they are doing some deeper investments in hardware” and that   there was a “terrific roadmap ahead” in 2021.

We finally got to know what he was referring to and this deeper investment in hardware is how Google is planning to make the Pixel 6 stand out from the giants, Samsung and Apple. You see, news broke out last year that Google has apparently been working with Samsung to develop a new chipset for its devices.

The new Google chipset would reportedly appear in Pixel phones as soon as this year, which means the Pixel 6 might not have Qualcomm power. Turns out the report was on point, 9 to 5Google has obtained some internal Google documentation which reveals Pixel 6 will be the first Google product to have this new GS101 chip from Google

GS refers to Google Silicon and GS101 is what they are calling the chip internally. The document reveals that this codename is also directly connected to Samsung, including references to Samsung Exynos which means the Google silicon and Samsung's Exynos will have some commonalities including software components. This is in line with last year's report, that Google is teaming up with Samsung, which is   providing design support and manufacturing for the project.

The report says the Google SoC is an eight-core ARM processor with hardware "optimized for Google's machine learning technology" and the always-on capabilities of the Google Assistant. The chip would be built at Samsung's foundries on the firm's 5nm process.

Google developing its own phone processor would mean dumping the Qualcomm SoCs it usually uses. Although high-end Snapdragon chips used by the vast majority of smartphone makers provide very high general-purpose as well as graphics performance, therefore enabling manufacturers to innovate with their cameras and software.

However, because they are off-the-shelf, they do not carry any custom-designed exclusive hardware that could differentiate a device in terms of performance and capabilities. I mean companies like Apple, Huawei and Samsung have developed their own smartphone SoCs for a while now. Apple went even further and built its own highly-integrated SoC for its Macs, which appeared to be quite powerful when compared to x86 processors from Intel.

Furthermore, its M1 chip carries numerous special-purpose accelerators that enable performance and capabilities not accessible to off-the-shelf CPUs, which changes the way Apple's processors can be used. So it's only natural for Google to get into building the chips that its OS runs on. It will allow them to optimize the chip design to how the next version of their OS and Apps will need to run most efficiently.

Also, Google's current chips that include Pixel Neural core which is camera silicon will work better on Google's in-house designed main chip since Google can tweak  controls however they want which is something not possible with off-the-shelf Qualcomm's chips. So an SoC division would give Google some much-needed flexibility when it comes to hardware. This will allow Google to innovate its Android and Chrome OS platforms quickly and stay competitive with Apple and Microsoft since it is considerably easier to implement certain features into in-house designed silicon than persuade a third party to incorporate  something into their SoC.

Also this means the Pixel 6 will have a proper in-house flagship processor and not a midrange one. Of course with that being said, let me know  what do you think about this down in the comments..

Over the years, smartphone companies have worked hard to give consumers the optimal user experience, and part of this is in the field of photography.

Improvements in camera sensors have led to increased resolution sizes for photographs, along with low-light performance gains and optical image stabilization. The smartphone camera has also focused heavily on computational photography, where onboard algorithms and potentially the use of multiple camera sensors can produce a far more detailed or better image than a single camera could on its own.

Google is the one who mastered computational photography. However, they lag behind the competition inversibility, especially in the zoom department. While an ultra-wide-angle lens is a nice inclusions the Pixel 5, its utility is lost when you want to punch in and unveil details you would ordinarily miss when taking a photo. That's where Zoom cameras come in handy. However, the competition is already offering periscope zoom cameras so if Google opts for a normal telephoto camera then they will still lack behind companies in the camera department.

But thankfully that's not going to happen because Google themselves sort of confirmed that the Pixel 6 Pro will come with a 5x Periscope zoom camera. According to XDA Developers, the new Google Camera update includes references to an "ultra tele" zoom toggle with a "real" optical zoom level of 5X. Google uses their Super Res Zoom technology to enable better zoom images, and the Pixel 4 combined this with a 2X telephoto sensor to deliver Super Res Zoom all the way to 8X. So just imagine what Google could provide with the combination of a dedicated 5X periscope zoom camera hardware plus the excellent Super Res Zoom post-processing on the Pixel 6 Pro.

Anyway, Pixel 6 and Pro aren't the only devices scheduled to launch this year. Google could also unveil their foldable smartphone, the Pixel Fold along with the Pixel 6. We have some new information about the handset. According to a reputed Korean media, the Elec, the Google Fold, or whatever Google end up calling it will have a 7.6" in folding display similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 3, and Samsung will provide the displays to Google.

Also, Google will be the only company apart from Samsung themselves to use the Ultra-thin Glass on the Pixel Fold. Google entering the foldable genre is good news for everyone because If two of the biggest names in the world of smartphones – Samsung and Google have folding phones out there, more casual users will be tempted to give foldables a try and more competitor brands will be just as tempted to enter the foldable smartphone market.

The added competition will likely help lower the overall cost of folding screen technology, thus leading to more affordable foldable phones. So pretty happy with how Google is taking their smartphone business seriously this time. With Huawei out of the picture, Samsung has found itself in a position where they don't have a real competitor in the Android space and we all know why that's not a good thing but thankfully it looks like Google is finally ready to fill Huawei's void. Let me know what do you think down in the comments...

Thank You..!
